Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians was written to address some errors threatening the church in Corinth. Given their varied backgrounds and cultural differences, it is not surprising, perhaps, to discover that disputes had arisen in the membership. The Apostle Paul (the first evangelist in Corinth) had taught them the Christian faith and practice years before, but the drastic cultural differences with general Corinthian society was negatively influencing the church. Some were even living in open opposition to the teaching of the Apostles. The church’s inability to find happy solutions to these internal conflicts prompted them to send a letter to Paul soliciting clarification on certain topics. The Epistle is Paul’s response to their questions. The root cause of these church dissensions was spiritual immaturity. Paul was obligated to write unto them as babes in Christ instead of adults. Instead of growing stronger in grace and faith, they had allowed themselves to be distracted by worldly concerns. This letter serves the Church of Christ today in many useful ways, especially in the important subject of solving tensions between Society’s customs and Christ’s teachings.
